Paper 4, Section A
English language has been spread ever since the 17th century when it was introduced by Great Britian. The English language has “1.5 billion people” who speak it however, less that “400 million” have it as their first language. English is spoken throughout the globe and is an essential part of using social media and communication to everyone around the world.
From all this information, English is the “world’s favorite lingua franca.” English is used worldwide and different countries in order to access digital media and communicate in homes. English is even often turned to when two people don’t share a “first language.” Although everyone may not use English in their everyday life, it’s a popular language that can be shared among two non native speakers.
With the popular use of the internet today, there are newer inventions that can help in order to understand what someone is saying even if they are speaking in a different language. These inventions include voice-regnition technology and computer translation. People who have these applications they are able to “speak their own language” and you can then “hear what their interlocutor is saying.” This then can limit the use of learning new languages, such as English, with this app at the touch of a button.
Although the voice translation systems is helpful for those who may not know a language, it can, in this case, harm English spreading throughout the world. English is known as the “world’s favorite language.” However, after these new inventions it can stop countries from learning the language. The spread of global language will soon decrease after new technological advances.
According to the article, Wonkyum Lee, who is “a South Korean computer scientist for Gridspace,” is working to make a translation and voice- recognition technology that you won’t be able to tell if it is a person or a robot. Christopher Manning also states that in the future, he is hoping computer translators will be even better than human translators. With upgrading technology and future inventions the translator will slow the spread of English throughout the world.
Kachru’s theory of concentric circle use of English and the use in different countries. The model has three circles, United States and Britian is in the inner circle which uses it as their native language. The outer circle is places that understand English but it isn’t their native language such as, Denmark or Sweden. Lastly, the third circle barely understands English or uses it. Such as Russia and Argentina. With the growing use of these translators the people who barely understand English could move into the inner circle and come off as English being their native language.
Due to the use of social media, and new technological advancements the status of English being the “world’s favorite language,” can no longer remain in tact. In social media, through celebrities and different apps there are numerous abbreviations spread aswell. With longer words being shortened and translation no one needs to learn English as more. This greatly threatens the language’s future.
AO1: 4 marks - While the original article is referenced a decent amount of times, it is not in a manner that effectively supports your ideas, you just quote it to say the same information. For example, you said ‘People who have these applications they are able to “speak their own language” and you can then “hear what their interlocutor is saying.”’ This way of quoting the text is just like paraphrasing.
ReplyDeleteAO2: 3 marks - the expression is a little bit unclear because of the quotes used, like mentioned earlier. Putting quotes in there without any reference to saying where they were from made it confusing for the reader to tell that is was the article being quoted and not the ideas of theorists.
AO4: 4 marks - The word count is a little short so it makes the explanations of points not very detailed. This word count means there are not a lot of points referenced and fully explained.
Total 11/25
Hello,
ReplyDeleteAO1: 6 marks - you shared a clear understanding of the text and its content. You explained the origin and spread of the English language well. You also shared a clear reference to specific points.
AO2: 3 marks - Your expression was clear and you had a few minor errors, they didn’t really impede communication but it did make your paper a little choppy. There were also words and sentences that you put in quotation marks that didn’t really need them. This also made the paper feel more choppy. An example is when you describe Wonkyum Lee, the quotes and the words “who is” aren’t really needed. Your content is relevant and your ideas are developed pretty clearly.
AO4: 4 marks - You shared a limited understanding of linguistic issues, concepts, and methods. I feel like you could have elaborated a lot more on your points, and this would’ve boosted your score. You also shared a limited reference to wider study of linguistic issues, concepts, and methods. You didn’t use much outside sources of information and concepts, this also weakened your score.
13/25, not much work needed, you’re in the target range for this paper, good job.
